Curriculum and Learning

The teaching team at Fiveways and the Junior School is highly qualified and experienced and the unique qualities of each child are recognised and nurtured. Our aim is to ensure our children become confident, active and independent learners, equipped with a firm foundation of skills.

Our Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum covers the three prime areas of learning and development; Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development, as well as the four Specific Areas – Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.  Children learn through play and exploration, fostering a love of learning and creativity.

Once children turn 4 years old, they move seamlessly into Foundation Stage 3, our Reception Class. A busy morning includes reading and writing, number work and time to be inquisitive about our world. Children learn to ask questions, to speak Mandarin and Spanish, play games and sing, explore the world around us and splash with paint. Our classrooms are packed with interesting things to do; children can dress up and play, explore an App on an iPad and curl up with a storybook.

The Key Stage 1 curriculum, followed in Years 1and 2, allows the children to develop and apply the skills and knowledge learned in the Foundation Stage, within a curriculum that is more formalised and continues to feed their curiosity. It has reading, writing, numbers and creativity at its heart.  As well as an exciting programme of trips out and about on the Isle of Wight, a day may include a lesson of Mandarin or Spanish, using an iPad to learn collaboratively with friends, an opportunity to play a cello or violin, the chance to run around a running track, swing a cricket bat or create a “Log Book” in the forest.

    YEARS 3 & 4

Taught by a Form Teacher, the core curriculum of English, Mathematics, Geography, History, Religious Studies and Drama is delivered in generously resourced, bright, and airy classrooms. Specialist teachers deliver Science, IT, Physical Education, Spanish, Music and Outdoor Learning.

The children enjoy working in the spacious Science Laboratory, the well-equipped Design and Technology Workshop and the colourful Art Studio.  The Music Centre echoes to the sound of an orchestra of instruments and the use of Information Technology runs through the veins of most subjects as the children have a raft of Chromebooks at their disposal.

The Sports Hall and acres of sports field provide ample space for regular sports training and for the many and varied sports fixtures programmed to take place.  The Outdoor Learning programme is delivered in a woodland den tucked away amongst the trees.

    YEARS 5 & 6

Specialist teachers for all subjects deliver the teaching of challenging work in these more senior years.  The busy timetable also sees the introduction of Latin.

Careful consideration is given to ‘setting’ the children for Mathematics and English.  Setting is introduced to ensure that the needs of all the children are targeted and supported to enable them to reach their full potential. Sets are reviewed on a regular basis and adjustments are made as appropriate.

The afternoon games programme also includes the opportunity for pupils to have the option of taking Adventure Service Challenge in place of traditional games activities.

From Year 4 onwards pupils have the opportunity to participate in a range of school trips. A list of example trips is available here
