English

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark”

    Victor Hugo

The English Department enriches and develops children's communication and learning, inspiring children to love the English language in all its forms and to develop an enthusiasm for literature and our rich literary heritage. The core English curriculum at Fiveways and Junior School is broad and challenging.

Our teachers are passionate about taking children on the wonderful journey throughout Fiveways and the Junior School, from learning to read, to reading to learn. Children learn through the stimulus of success and teachers endeavour to enable them to form and communicate their opinions through speech and written work with accuracy and clarity

The development of literacy skills is not subject specific and we recognise that the effective use and understanding of written and spoken English is crucial to successful learning in all subjects.

Every opportunity is placed to develop high self-esteem and to encourage high expectations throughout the English curriculum and into all other areas of learning throughout the school. We wish our pupils to aspire to do their very best and endeavour to guide them at every opportunity to achieve success.
