GCSEs

Curriculum for Years 10 and 11

Pupils study an optimum number of ten subjects at GCSE and there are opportunities for them to exercise their own choices within the specified categories. The core subject requirements ensure that the pupils’ GCSE choices are broad and balanced. All pupils in Years 10 and 11 study for the English Baccalaureate (EBacc). This means studying a core of English Language & English Literature, Mathematics, Science, Geography or History and a modern language.

The 'core plus options' curriculum at GCSE offers pupils the opportunity to select some subjects according to interest and aptitude, whilst also ensuring that they continue their studies in all the centrally important academic subjects.

Five subjects make up the core of the curriculum: English (Language and Literature), Mathematics, a Language, a Science and a Humanity (either Geography or History).  All pupils follow GCSE courses in each of these subjects.  In addition, pupils in these years have Games and a Personal Development lesson each week.

In Science, pupils can select one, two or three subjects from Biology, Chemistry or Physics.  Alternatively, pupils can opt to take Dual Award Science which is awarded two GCSEs but covers all three disciplines.

Pupils wishing to study more than one language can do so by selecting additional languages from the option blocks and/or French from the Elective block.  Languages assume previous study.  Pupils who speak English as a second langauge can opt for ESL as their modern language.

Finally, pupils select a further subject from a list of 'Electives'.  These subjects, with the exception of Informatics, lead to a further qualification although not necessarily a GCSE. Some of these choices complement the main GCSE subjects whilst others provide an opportunity to study in a different way. Pupils wishing to take Extra English and/or Extra Mathematics are required to take these as their elective.  Electives account for two teaching periods per week and cover both years of the course.

GCSE Subject Choices for September 2018:

All pupils will study the following Core Subjects:

    ·        English (Language and Literature)
    ·        Mathematics

Pupils are then required to select a further six subjects, from option blocks 1 to 6 below, together with a further subject from the Elective block.

Please note: pupils must select at least one Humanity (Hu), one Language (La) and one Science (Sc) subject.  Dual Science counts as two subjects and therefore must be selected from Blocks 2 and 4.
