“tHOSE WHO KNOW NOTHING OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES KNOW NOTHING OF THEIR OWN”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Communication is one of the most important life skills we can give to our children. At Fiveways and in the Junior School, we believe this goes beyond the limitations of our own language.
At Fiveways, children learn Spanish and Mandarin. Evidence shows that the younger children are when they start learning languages, the greater the success, not just in language learning, but across other subjects too. Who wouldn’t want their child to foster a love of languages, but to improve their ability at maths and music too? We use songs, games, IT and puppets to engage and entertain the children, whilst enabling them to absorb new language and grow in confidence.
In the Junior School, children continue with Spanish, building on the speaking and listening skills they have developed, and begin to enhance their reading and writing too. We start to explore grammar - the building blocks of language - and use our vocabulary to make longer phrases and sentences. Latin is introduced in Year 5, enabling us to become ‘Linguistic Code-Breakers’, and helping us to underpin our grammatical understanding. Latin is most definitely not a ‘dead language’ for us and we use it to extend our own vocabulary in English and to foster an understanding of the links between European languages.
