Welcome to Boarding
Independent day & boarding school for boys and girls aged 2 to 18

Welcome to Boarding

We are really pleased we were chosen as finalists in the BSA (Boarding Schools' Association) Supporting Excellence Awards for our boarding houses and were shortlisted in the Independent Schools' 2021 Response to Covid Award. Both reflect our dedication to creating a safe and homely environment for our boarding community.

Boarding at Ryde encourages pupils to become independent, open-minded and principled thinkers. Family values are at our core and the wellbeing of our boarders is paramount. We encourage all pupils to find a good work/life balance, and be proactive members of a supportive community. Our last Ofsted report concluded we provide an ‘outstanding’ boarding provision for those in our care and at Ryde we pride ourselves on delivering an exceptional level of pastoral care with an emphasis on family values and well-ordered supervision.

Life-long friendships are made at Ryde. International and UK boarders live with local pupils who flexi or weekly board. Add to this the rich diversity of boys and girls, differing ages and backgrounds and you have all the ingredients for one big happy family unit, of which all the boarders are extremely proud. As a team we see our pupils flourish and feel privileged to watch them develop into confident, articulate and achieving adults.

We regularly welcome boarders from forces families, and we are pleased to be able to offer a specific armed forces boarding package (please see below for further details). Please do come and visit us and meet our pupils and staff and we look forward to welcoming you to the boarding family.

Boarding Life

Boarders are supported by a team of dedicated staff. We pride ourselves on delivering an exceptional level of pastoral care with the emphasis on family values and well-ordered supervision. Our two boarding houses, situated in the Ryde School grounds offer comfortable, modern and spacious rooms for one, two or three boarders, many with en-suite facilities and many with stunning sea views. Relaxation areas, quiet study areas with evening prep supervision and tutoring all help to create an environment where pupils are able to study and relax. Excellent pastoral care, a family atmosphere and clear house rules and supervised study times create a calm, safe and friendly atmosphere to relax, study and socialise.

Numerous extra-curricular activities are available at the weekends and evenings after prep. Boarders can join in, study quietly in their bedrooms at their desks or explore the safe and extensive grounds (over 17 acres) surrounding the School in Ryde or visit the town of Ryde or local Island towns easily through excursions, arranged trips or if students are older, individually or in small groups at the weekend.

Our son joined Ryde School in the Lower Sixth as a weekly boarder. The boarding team were incredibly welcoming and their very warm and friendly manner really helped him settle in. We saw him every weekend but it soon became clear that he actually felt he was missing out on all the weekend fun that was had by his boarding mates, evidence that he was making plenty of new friends and the attraction of boarding weekend activities.

Being a boarder here gave me a chance to see the world differently. Because of living with so many people coming from different countries, with different cultures I learnt so much in just one place. It's unbelievable how quickly I made friends and was so comfortable with talking to my teachers about anything. I haven’t enjoyed going to school that much in a long time. Coming here was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made
