Pastoral Care

  • Each pupil is placed in a tutor group and belongs to one of four houses: Chine (green), Hanover (red), Seaford (blue) and Trinity (yellow).  There are one or two tutors for each group, depending on numbers in the tutor group. Tutors meet with their tutor groups twice daily and have extended meetings on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

  • The tutor is at the centre of pastoral care and must always be the first point of contact for tutees and their parents. Pupils should see their tutor as a person to whom they can talk and discuss their lives. Tutors should always be informed of any matters involving their tutees and are expected to pass on appropriate information to relevant staff. For matters involving boarders Ann Sutton, Head of Boarding, should also be involved.
  • Mr Chris Ody has overall responsibility for Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education. However,in the Sixth Form, this responsibility is delegated to the Head of Sixth Form, Mr Steve Baxter. This takes place both in tutor period and formal lessons (as well as within all subject syllabuses).  A PHSCE curriculum is provided for tutors and teachers to follow.  Upper Sixth students play an active part in delivering the PSHCE programme to the Lower Sixth.

  • There are four Heads of House, and their role is to manage a team of tutors and prefects in supporting pastoral care and co-ordinating House activities and competitions. Staff and prefects play a pivotal role in fostering House identity. Other than the Headmaster, the Deputy Headmaster and the Head of Boarding, all staff are attached to one of the four Houses. This includes technicians who have regular contact with pupils.  Eight Upper Sixth students are chosen as Heads of House, and play a key role in organising House evenbs.

  • David Lloyd, the Deputy Headmaster, has overall responsibility for the pastoral welfare of the school.  He chairs both the Heads of Year and the Pastoral Committee meetings.

  • Mrs Sian Evans is the Senior Teacher responsible for girls’ pastoral care.

  • The School Nurse, Mrs Sarah Baker, provides both a medical and a counselling service for pupils and administers the Peer Listeners scheme.  Chris Ody is the member of staff in charge of the Peer Listeners. All Listeners have to undergo a rigorous selection procedure and receive appropriate training. The Listeners room can be found in the Medical Centre, under the daily supervision of the School Nurse.

  • The Chaplain, Mr James Leggett, is another person to whom the pupils can turn for advice. He is regularly in school on Monday and Friday mornings, and can be contacted at other times by completing and leaving a “Please Contact Me slip in his post box in the Listeners room. His telephone numbers are 565621 (home) and 566381 (office).

  • Boarders may also contact Father James Catlin who regularly visits the Bembridge Boarding Campus. His telephone number is 562171.
