This subject is available only in the Sixth Form. At present we study the Edexcel syllabus, which allows us to develop an understanding of the UK political system and current developments, the United Kingdom’s place within the EU and then a thorough investigation into American politics and its comparisons with the British political system.
Course topics at AS include: The Role of the Prime Minister, The Powers of the Judiciary, Civil Liberties, Pressure Groups, The Electoral System, Political Parties and The History of Political Ideology in Britain. Candidates are examined through the use of short answer questions, some extended writing and a paper that looks at document analysis and response.
At A2 the topics covered are: The American Constitution, The Role of the President, American Political Parties, Congress, The Senate,Electoral Systems and a survey of current American political developments. A key part of the course involves a comparison between the British and American political systems.
