Mathematics
The Sixth Form
An A level qualification in Mathematics is highly regarded by both universities and employers. This is because not everyone is capable of mastering the concepts taught – those who can, stand out from the crowd. If you expect to gain at least a B grade in the GCSE and you enjoy a challenge, then you may be someone who can aspire to an AS or A level in Mathematics.
At Ryde School we follow the Edexcel modular A level scheme. This consists of a number of self-contained blocks of the syllabus, which are each ssessed by a 1 hour 30 minutes examination. Subject to certain constraints, an AS qualification is awarded on the basis of performance in three modules, whereas an A level requires six. Pupils can also gain a Further Maths grade at AS or A level if they complete either three or six additional modules.
We also offer a GCSE retake course for pupils joining us in the Sixth Form, as well as a handful of our own Year 11 pupils, who have not yet achieved a C grade. This currently consists of three or four periods a week for one year.
Extra-Curricular
In the Sixth Form we try to offer at least one trip a year to a university offering sample Maths lectures and a tour of the site. Other conferences are available and can be attended by pupils hoping to study a maths related course after leaving Ryde.
More able Mathematicians, in all years, have the chance to enter national maths contests, the best performers gaining certificates and, for a handful, an invitation to take part in the UK Maths Olympiad. Furthermore, we prepare and enter teams into the National Maths Team Challenges for Years 11 - 13 in the Autumn and Years 8 - 9 in the Spring. These provide valuable experience in the preparation for the competition.
Maths Clinic is available at 4.00 pm daily (apart from Friday) and some lunchtimes, to offer help to any pupil experiencing problems in Maths. It is staffed by members of the department and, for most pupils, occasional attendance is enough to ensure that gaps due to a simple misunderstanding or absence are filled.
