International Baccalaureate

From September 2010, Ryde School will  be offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme alongside our existing A Level curriculum. The IB Diploma Programme is a prestigious pre-university qualification and is recognised by universities and governments throughout the world.

Students looking for a broad curriculum with an international perspective will find the IBDP accessible and stimulating.

The IBDP offers a continuum of high quality education that encourages international awareness and a positive attitude to independent learning.

The Diploma consists of six courses as listed below.   Three subjects are taken at Higher Level and three at Standard Level and a wide choice of subjects is offered:
  • First Language
  • Second Language
  • A Science
  • Mathematics
  • A Humanity
  • An Art or Elective
In addition, all students are required to complete:
  • An Extended Essay (an independent research paper on a topic of their choice)
  • Theory of Knowledge (a course in critical thinking)
  • CAS (a programme of Creativity, Action and Service)
At Ryde, the extra-curricular programme is extensive and we are pleased with this formal recognition of achievement.

Allan Graham, Director of Studies (Sixth Form) and IBDP Coordinator says “the International Baccalaureate is a truly international qualification which gives credit for achievement in different areas of school life. The package is varied and equips students with the skills necessary to become citizens of the world. The IBDP is a very impressive qualification and the emphasis on independent learning is excellent preparation for university life and beyond.

Pre-Sixth Form Course for Overseas Students

We are delighted to confirm that Ryde School also offers a one year Pre-Sixth Form Course for overseas students aged 15-16 in preparation for either the IB Diploma Programme or A Levels.

The aim is not necessarily to put a heavy emphasis on GCSE entries although as you are already aware, a good range is available. The course will include at least 5 examined subjects at GCSE level; some additional non-examined subjects; English language lessons (as appropriate), as well as a wide selection of sports, arts and extra-curricular activities.  Students will predominantly be taught alongside our pupils and would therefore be totally immersed in school life as a whole.

A limited number of places are available for suitable candidates.  Should you require any further information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
