Boarding for Boy and Girls

Pupils Views

Every morning we get woken up, we have nice breakfast in our refectory, we pack our things for school and get on the coach, which we know is always waiting for us at the gate. After school, we all meet again on the coach, some of us cheerfully sharing stories and gossips of the day and some of us tired, just listening to our music.

To come back to Bembridge Boarding House after school feels like coming home, to the privacy of your own room and the privilege of your own time management. You come to a little world of its own where there is always someone to play football or volleyball with, where anyone would make you a cup of tea and where there is always space for creative ideas and ambitious initiatives. (For instance, some newly introduced upcoming events are the Model Eurovision Contest, the Outdoor Games Evening and the Recycling workshop).

Ms Sutton is the most patient and most understanding person on Earth and somehow she always comes up with clever answers to all our questions and enquiries. Our boarding house could easily be compared to a small country of its own, where feelings of patriotism and happy belonging among the residents sometimes clash with the insistent wish to rise as an independent individual and express oneself. It is when these clashes have to be negotiated that important lessons are learnt and in dealing with such problems that we are subtly and imperceptibly prepared for the wider world.

As the Isle of Wight is one of the sunniest places in the whole of Britain, the summer term at Bembridge is a perfect time for barbeques, outdoor activities ranging from Go-Karts to High Ropes and Abseiling, and the boys’ favourite past time – Football, on the huge field in front of the house.

During the longer evenings in Autumn and Spring, one of our favourite pastimes are movie nights, when our tv rooms (some of them newly refurbished and most comfortable) burst with excitement and thrill. There are also the traditional 'wooden spoon' challenges where the girls tend to beat the boys in cooking competitions, while the boys always impress the judges with their witty Christmas plays.

Every night there are board games being played in the kitchen while the kettle for coffee is on and bread is being toasted. Jokes and laughter will be heard and generally one feels acceptance and tolerance in the air. It is a great feeling to know you can always count on someone from the boarding house to be there for you.
