Foundation Stage

Our day begins at 8.40 am when the register is completed, but you can arrive at anytime from 8.15 am when our front door is unlocked.  We look forward to greeting the F1 children at 12.30 pm for their afternoon sessions.

You will be welcomed by Miss Lovell and then guided into your classrooms. Once there, you can greet your teachers with a smile and a polite “Good Morning" or “Good Afternoon".

You and Your belongings

Your name must be sewn into all of your items of your school uniform and clearly marked on any other items you bring into school. As you come in the door you will need to find your peg with your name beside it. Hang your bag on your peg together with your coat. Put your gloves, hat and scarf in the basket above your peg.

If you bring a small toy to school, please ask Mummy or Daddy to put your name on it so that it can be packed in your school bag before you go home. Please do not bring precious things which may get broken.

When you reach F3 you can bring your own pencil case with named felt tip pens that we keep for special occasions.

In the morning

There is always a selection of activities to do when you arrive. You can use your pencils, dress up, cut and stick at a table, or play in the play corner. Be busy, and then you can play until registration time.

If you are in F3 then there will be an Assembly in the morning at 8.45 am. We sing a song called a hymn, hear stories and share a prayer. In F2 you will have a short circle time, to share news and stories. If it is a special day, like a birthday, we celebrate with candles and a cake.

After assembly our mornings are very busy times. We settle into groups and do lots of different activities. We share big books, learn how to use a pencil, listen for sounds in words and share our thoughts and ideas by talking to one another.

We count and sort, write numbers and play number games. We measure, play shops and make shapes into patterns.

When we have finished our focused activities you are then able to select an activity you would like to do. Perhaps you would like to investigate bugs in the garden, create music at the music table, create a pattern using the carpet shapes or perform a play for your friends on the grass.

At break time we all make our way into the dining room. You can select the fruit and drink you would like and sit quietly at a table. You should try and remember to say “please" and “thank you". When we have finished, it is time for a short play in the garden or the playground.  We ride on the toys or play in the castle play area.

At lunchtime

If you are in F2 and will be going home at lunchtime, you will need to help gather together your belongings and wait to be picked up. Home time is 11.40 and Mummy or Daddy need to wait in the Foyer until Miss Lovell calls them through.

If you are staying for lunch, the menu is by the front door and tells us what is for lunch every day.

You can have a small lunch if you are not hungry and second helpings if you have a big appetite. It is good to try new foods, so try to taste everything at least once. We encourage good table manners, so you may like to practise holding a knife and fork ready to cut up your lunch. If you find this tricky, ask for help and a teacher will be happy to help you.

The afternoon

If you are in F1 you will be arriving at school after you have eaten your lunch at home. Miss Lovell and Mrs Bell will greet you at the door. You will have a circle time to share news and stories. If it is a special day, like a birthday, we celebrate with candles and a cake. The rest of the afternoon is a busy time full of activities and time to play.

If you are in F2 and staying for the whole day, you may like a little rest in the quiet corner before starting the busy afternoon.

If you are in F3, the afternoon is full of exciting activities, learning about the world around us, singing and using the skills you learnt in the morning.

In the afternoons there will also be opportunities to work alongside the other children in the Foundation Stage.

Everyone in the Foundation Stage will have a mid afternoon snack and drink in the dining room.

At the end of the day

Every day will end with a story and an opportunity to find out what will be happening the next day.

At the end of the day, it is time to gather together all of your belongings and wait to be picked up from the door. When parents arrive, a teacher will call your name and you need to walk sensibly to the door with your hand free to hold securely Mummy’s or Daddy’s hand ready to leave the building.

Rewards

If you try really hard with your activities and work, or are especially kind and thoughtful, you will be rewarded with a star stuck onto your star badge on your jumper.

If you are in F3 your name may be written in the Big News Book and you will get a special certificate at assembly on Friday. If you keep the Golden Rules you will enjoy Golden Time with your friends.

In the classroom

It is our classroom and everything in it is ours to share. We all need to help keep it tidy. When you hear the special tidy up song, it means it is time to stop and help your friends tidy away. It is always kind and helpful to put all the items back in the correct place ready for the next time you may need them.

We take it in turns to be the leader and to be part of the tidy up teams.

You can go to the toilet by yourself whenever you need it, or you can ask for help. There will always be someone to help you. Flush the toilet, and try to remember to carefully wash your hands afterwards.

At home

It is always fun to share books at home sat on the sofa, or at bedtime. In time you will learn to read words and books in F3. When you are practising your words, you should ask people at home to help you, by sticking words up around the house, in the kitchen or in your bedroom. Curl up with a reading book and visit the local library.

When there are birthday cards to write at home, ask if you can write your own name. Perhaps on shopping day you could help write the list or draw pictures of the items you need to get at the supermarket.

Draw the things you see when you are out and about, and bring the pictures in to share with your friends.

Out and about

We shall be venturing out on various trips during the year. Sometimes we will change into our PE kit and board a mini bus, to take us on our voyage of discovery. Children in F2 have ramble mornings when we shall hold the rope and go to the Big Field for activities.

What’s going on

Your family will know what we are doing at school because our weekly activities are posted on the wall outside your classroom on the Foundation Stage notice board and on the Foundation Stage white boards.

We send “Update" home in your book bag and write messages in your Reading Record Book (F3 only).

Please remind your parents to look in your bag in case there are special letters or party invitations from your friends.

Parents can speak to teachers at any time, and we hold termly ‘Drop-in’ sessions when you can see your child in action and look at your child’s work.

The teachers write reports about your progress once a year in F2 (Summer Term) and once each term in F3.

Fiveways is a busy, happy place and full of children just like you, so enjoy yourself.
