Welcome to Year 2

Our day
Our day begins with your arrival at school between 8.15 am and 8.40 am and ends at 3.40 pm.
Your parents bring you to the classroom in the morning. At the end of the day they wait on the bridge and then meet you from the classroom.
You and your belongings
Now you are in Year 2 you will be able to organise your own coat and book bag at the beginning of each day.
In the morning you will take your coat, PE bag, book bag, reading and spelling books to the appropriate place. Your water bottle and snack may be placed on the side in the boxes.
You will need to bring into school your own pencil case, pencils, felt tip pens, coloured pencils, an eraser, a short ruler and sharpener. These are kept in your tray. Pocket-sized toys may be brought into school. These stay in your tray until playtime.
In the mornings
Each morning begins with a little work, followed by a fun learning activity.
On Mondays we have a “Year 2, It’s You" assembly. You can talk about a hobby and bring things in to share with us all. It is fun to work with a friend who shares the same interest.
After Assembly you will follow the timetable on display in your classroom. Most mornings, you will do numeracy and literacy.
Break time and lunchtime
You go out to play and you may take out any toy you have brought into school. At break time you will have time for your drink and a small snack – a piece of fruit.
In the afternoon
In the afternoon, you will do all the other school subjects. Your PE kit will be sent home after a games lesson and this must be returned the next day. During the Autumn Term you will have the chance to go swimming on a Friday afternoon. Swimming lessons take place at Medina Swimming Pool in
Rewards
Good work and effort are rewarded with stars and praise. “Extra" special work is rewarded with a star on your own superstar chart.
On Fridays we share “Big News" for extra special reasons. Your name will appear in the Big News Diary.
After school
You may want to stay to a club until 4.45 pm. Clubs may change every half term and you choose the activities in which you wish to participate.
Jobs to do
In school, there are jobs to be done. Collecting the register, taking messages, giving out books and hymn books. Some of these jobs are within the classroom, others are helping everybody because you are now at the top of Fiveways.
Out and about
We usually go on several trips over the course of the year. You will receive a letter about the trips, giving details of what clothing you will need. You will usually wear school uniform or PE kit and a cosy coat.
At home
Every night you will need to read to a member of your family and look, say, cover, write and check your spellings. On a Wednesday, you will have some ‘Super Sums’ and at the weekend some ‘Sounds Fun’. This should take no longer than 20 minutes.
During the holidays you will not have a school reading book, but you can enjoy the books you have at home and visit the Library.
What’s going on
Your family will know what we are doing at school because our weekly activities are posted outside the classroom.
Parents can speak to teachers at any time and come to special evening meetings in the Autumn and Spring Terms.
The teachers write reports about your progress three times a year.
We send “Update" and “RJS News" home in your book bag and write messages in the Reading Record Book. Party invitations and invitations to our special events also travel to and fro in the book bag, so please remember to empty it out carefully each evening, to make sure you don’t miss anything important.
"As a member of Year 2, you are at the top of Fiveways. We hope you will always set a good example to younger children, work hard and enjoy your year."
