Learning Support Department

The Learning Support Department welcomes children who, it is felt, would benefit from additional support. The team of teachers is able to deliver specialist teaching to children with specific learning difficulties, who fit within the academic profile of the school. Children are taught using cumulative, structured and multi-sensory methods that have proved highly successful. A programme of study skills is also followed to allow each child to maximise his or her learning potential; the focus is on individual pupil needs. Thinking skills and reasoning skills schemes can also be used, if necessary.

Children are withdrawn from selected classes to follow a programme tailored to their individual needs. An individual education plan is written in conjunction with the child and circulated to all staff involved with his or her teaching. Children are carefully monitored and learning support staff liaise closely with mainstream staff to facilitate progress. Pupil progress is measured using recognised standardised normative tests, allowing the Learning Support Department to report on progress.
