Mathematics

We build upon the numeracy skills taught at Fiveways, aiming to give our children a high degree of confidence when dealing with figures. In Years 5 and 6 they are setted to ensure they are in the group most appropriate for their ability and confidence in the subject.

All of our children follow the guidelines of the National Curriculum and Numeracy Strategy. We use the New Heinemann Mathematics Scheme, a
recently published programme, placing a strong emphasis on mental mathematics as well as investigations and problem solving, shape, space and measures, data handling and probability. Children benefit from a multiple method approach, which includes use of games, puzzles, extension activities and practical equipment, catering for different learning styles.

Children enjoy entering the weekly mathematics challenges. It is of importance to us that all children feel they can achieve in this important area of the curriculum.
