PE and Games

Physical Education is a term used to encapsulate all sports and numerous activities of a physical nature and, as such, is an essential part of life at Ryde Junior School. Education through planned and purposeful activity, aimed at promoting and developing a healthy and active lifestyle, is an integral part of the total school curriculum.
Here, we aim to help children develop a love of sport and physical activity, which will benefit them throughout their lives. They are taught the value of fitness and that a healthy body helps to balance a healthy mind.
Our children experience different sports and activities. Typically boys play football, rugby and hockey in the winter, and cricket in the summer, while girls focus on netball and hockey in the winter months, and rounders in the summer. Children have two PE lessons a week and two games afternoons. The PE lessons are devoted to cross country, orienteering, gymnastics, dance, swimming, badminton, volleyball and athletics.
Children have frequent opportunities to represent the school. A comprehensive fixture list is drawn up each term. While teams are selected on merit, we aim to involve as many children as possible in matches and ‘B’ fixtures are organised wherever possible. Fixtures are organised with schools both on the Island as well as the mainland, with much success.
