Departments and Curriculum
The principles of education at Ryde School are to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, which allows the pupils a diverse range of alternatives and routes from Year 7 through to Year 13. The curriculum is designed to provide stretch and challenge for the most able; equally we are determined to provide support and nurture for those who find difficulties. Our curriculum falls into three main sections: Years 7 and 8; Years 9 to 11; the Sixth Form.
From Year 7 to 8 pupils sample a range of subjects including Art, Design and Technology, Music, History, Geography, Drama, ICT, Sport, RE and PSHCE around a traditional core of Mathematics, Science, English and French. All subjects broadly follow the National Curriculum for Key Stage Three or the Independent Schools’ Examination Board syllabuses, but we are not driven by it and do not test externally, preferring to prepare better for the next stage.
Year 9 to 11. Year 9 is used in preparation for GCSE and towards the end of Year 9 all pupils can then choose to specialise in the non-core subjects. Three are selected from a list of subjects, which include Art, Business Studies, Drama, Design and Technology, Geography, History, ICT, Music, PE, RE and Spanish. These subjects are then followed to GCSE with the aim of all pupils achieving passes in 9 or 10 subjects at the end of year 11. Latin may be possible as an extra-curricular subject.
For Years 12 and 13 pupils choose their AS levels from a wide range of options. The subjects offered include Geography, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, French, Spanish, English, Film Studies, Theatre Studies, Business Studies, Economics, Fine Art, Textiles, Photography, ICT, Design and Technology, History, Politics and Music. (German may also be possible, if numbers allow). Pupils are expected to take either three or four subjects to AS level, dependent upon their aspirations and capacity, and then progress with three only to A2. Support is offered to those struggling to make the grade and to those who aspire to the higher grade Universities. It is an expectation that the majority of pupils from Ryde School will progress on to University education.
Ryde School is now a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate and we aim to become an IB World School in time to offer the IB from September 2010.
The School offers revision courses in the Easter holidays for GCSE and A level pupils.
