Library Information...
Ryde Senior School library is housed in a purpose-built block, opened in 2000. It caters for the needs of all senior school pupils, aged 11 to 18. The library is overseen by a full-time librarian, Mrs R Hamar. Mr P Griffiths, of the English Department, is in charge of whole-school links. The library has 8000 titles on the computer, this includes CDs, DVDs as well as books. We also provide daily newspapers and a wide selection of magazines. We aim to foster reading for pleasure and are continuing to develop our independent learning resources.
Subject teachers regularly book the space for their classes; in the Lower School, the English Department provide a weekly opportunity for their classes to use the space for both research and independent reading. The library provides stunning views of the Solent, and is, therefore, a popular venue for Sixth form enrichment lectures and outside speakers. Scholastic Book Fairs are held every year and the library is a site for National Poetry Day and National Schools' Film Week activities. For the past two years, professional poets have visited the school to provide a number of exciting workshops for our younger pupils.
The library is open from 8.45 each morning. Sixth formers find it a valuable area for revision and independent study, and use this at any time during the day. The library is open each break and lunchtime for the remainder of the school. Homework Club operates every day, from 4pm to 5.30.
