Junior Maths Challenge
A team of four pupils from Years 8 and 9 were selected for the Final of UKMT Challenge and went off to Lancing College with Mrs Waldron, in the hope of success. A lot of very good schools in the South East Region took part in the competition but at the end of the first of four rounds, Ryde School were joint top with 100%. The Challenge was not only to work as individuals, but as a team, on the problems set before them.

The team went into the next rounds, working very well together. At the end of the Challenge, Ryde were placed a very creditable 3rd after Lancing College and Portsmouth Grammar School.

Debating and Public Speaking
Debating
Ryde School entered a team of six in the British Parliamentary debating competition, and performed extremely well against the top schools in the South East, and, although they did not win the whole competition, they did argue extremely lucidly and eloquently against some very good schools (Winchester, Rodean and Brighton College) and held their own in an extremely tough competition, which only allowed them 15 minutes to prepare and deliver their speeches.
The team was:
Ed Stanford – Clark, Peter Snell, Rachel Boswell, Georgiana Chemiec, Mari Hamer, Claire Watt

Public Speaking
We entered three teams for the Youth Speaks public speaking competition, all of whom performed extremely well, covering the topics of Afghanistan, Eating Disorders, and ICT and education.
The pupils were:
Daneila Sauven, Jasmina Spence & Verity Brown
Peter, Snell, Georgiana, Chemiec & Mari Hamer
Rachel Boswell, Gargie Ahmed & Oshine Saxena

Rachel, Gargie and Oshine won the senior competition, and will represent the Island in the next round. Rachel also won the best speaker prize with one of the strongest speeches given in recent years.

Schools' International Multi Event Championships
Pentathlete Keno Mario Ghae gains 4th position
and Team Silver for England

Keno Mario Ghae competed as a member of the England Squad in Glasgow. His was a tremendous achievement. Having been competing all year, he succeeded in keeping his form very late into the season, avoiding injury while continuing to train in very cold conditions leading up to this event. The five events were 60m hurdles, 200m sprint, long jump, shot and 800m. Keno was competing against the very best multi eventers from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. He achieved personal bests in the hurdles, (a time of 8.65), long jump (6m 47cm) and in the 200m (23.1 seconds). Throwing 10m61cm in the shot and taking only 2m 16 seconds in the 800m allowed Keno to take fourth place overall and Team Silver for England
