Listeners
The Listeners is a successful and well-supported group of volunteer pupils, mostly from Years 12 and 13 (although some Year 11 pupils have also recently been involved) who provide a valued service for any pupil wishing to talk through a problem or worry. It is particularly popular amongst the pupils, as it is peer led, and does not directly involve adults or teachers.
The Listeners receive training in listening skills and strategies from the school matron and are available for consultation before, during and after school. Details of who is available at what time are posted around the school campus. There is a dedicated room at their disposal, discreetly situated opposite Matron’s office. The high number of volunteers is a good indication of how much the older pupils wish to help and of how useful the service is for pupils of all ages.
Confidentiality is assured, although pupils are aware that matters of a very serious nature will need to be passed on to a member of staff if the Listener feels that this is appropriate. This scheme is regarded as being highly successful by all within the school community.
