Modern Languages

Learning a foreign language at GCSE has never been more important. It hugely enhances young people’s communication skills and opens doors to understanding different cultures, promoting global awareness and empathy. Academically, studying a language boosts literacy and improves memory and cognitive functions, sharpening problem-solving abilities. Professionally, bilingualism is a highly sought-after skill, increasing career prospects in sectors like business, tourism, and diplomacy, and potentially leading to higher earning potential. Furthermore, achieving a GCSE qualification in a language demonstrates discipline and a commitment to learning, which is valued by universities and employers alike. It also provides a strong foundation for continued study in the Sixth Form and beyond, making the world feel smaller and more accessible. We offer French, German, Mandarin and Spanish.

Where can this subject take you?

A GCSE in a foreign language is a valuable asset, opening doors to diverse career paths and further education. It serves as an excellent foundation for pursuing Languages post-16 or combining language study with subjects like Business, Law or International Relations at university. Career-wise, in addition to language-specific roles such as translating and interpreting, this will also be of huge value for travel and customer-facing roles, international business and marketing, education and international diplomatic roles amongst many others. It signals cultural competence and advanced communication skills, making candidates more competitive in today’s global job market, often leading to roles involving international collaboration or travel.

Course Content/Structure

All four skill areas will be practised throughout the course and the course books provide ample revision material, along with exam-style practice. The new IGCSE and GCSE courses require far more independence and spontaneity, and as well as the key vocabulary and grammar, an understanding of the culture of the target language countries is essential.

An (I)GCSE in Modern Languages will enable pupils to:

  • Communicate confidently, express and develop thoughts and ideas spontaneously and fluently.
  • Listen to and understand clearly articulated, standard speech at near normal speed.
  • Deepen their knowledge about how language works and enrich their vocabulary.
  • Develop understanding of the culture and identity of countries and communities where a language is spoken.

Develop language-learning skills both for immediate use and to prepare them for further language study and use in school, higher education or in employment.

Assessment

The new IGCSE and GCSE are 100% externally marked exams with no coursework. For IGCSE, there is no tiered entry, meaning all pupils will sit the same exams which assess all levels of ability. For the AQA GCSE, there is the option of a foundation or higher-level paper depending on the grade aimed for. Each skill is tested separately.

Listening: Comprehension tasks requiring a mixture of short and long answers.

Speaking: A photo card task (plus a roleplay for AQA Mandarin and Spanish, and a‘read aloud’ task for Spanish), followed by a general conversation task based on the topic areas.

Reading: Comprehension tasks on a mixture of short and extended texts including a longer literary text, plus two written tasks and a gap-fill grammar task.

Writing: IGCSE has two written tasks and a gap-fill grammar task. AQA GCSE also has a mixture of short and long written tasks plus a short translation into Mandarin or Spanish.

Each exam is worth 25% of the final grade. The speaking element will be conducted internally by a teacher during an examining period defined by the exam board. It is externally assessed.
