The Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is an idyllic, safe, and inspiring landscape that we are proud to call home. As an independent day and boarding school, Ryde School offers pupils the unique advantage of growing up in a stunning natural environment while remaining closely connected to the UK mainland and the wider world: an island school with a global outlook.

Whether you are looking to relocate your family to a place where children can truly thrive, interested in community daily for their education from the mainland or considering a world-class British boarding education for your child from overseas, the Island provides the perfect backdrop for a rich, well-rounded upbringing.

Visiting the island

The island has an interesting history and many things to do and see.  Here are just a few!

Take a peek into the private lives of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and their nine children. Osborne House was their beloved palatial holiday home.

Walk through the grand state rooms, stroll down to Queen Victoria’s private bathing beach, and visit the Swiss Cottage—a alpine-style wooden chalet built for the royal children to learn gardening and cooking.

Located on the far western tip of the Island, Alum Bay is world-famous for its multi-colored sand cliffs, which feature 21 different shades of naturally occurring minerals.

Ride the iconic vintage chairlift down from the clifftop to the beach below. From there, you can take a boat trip out to get an up-close look at The Needles (the towering chalk stacks) and the striped red-and-white lighthouse.

Compton Bay is a rugged, unspoiled stretch of coast that is a paradise for fossil hunters.

Book a guided fossil walk or explore the beach yourself at low tide to find the giant, fossilised three-toed footprints of an Iguanodon cast in the reef.

Relocating to the Island

Relocating your family is about more than just finding a new house; it is about choosing a rhythm of life where your children can truly thrive. For many parents, the Isle of Wight represents a return to a more traditional, active childhood, but without the isolation often associated with rural living.

At Ryde School, we frequently welcome families who have traded the hectic pace of London or the Home Counties for the space, safety, and fresh air of the Island allowing their children to grow up with ‘sand between their toes’. Here, the commute is replaced by coastal walks, and weekends are spent on the water or exploring.

The Island offers a unique ecosystem where children can enjoy a level of independence that is increasingly rare on the mainland including an active outdoor childhood; a safe supportive community and excellent local infrastructure which includes thriving independent shops, a vibrant arts scene and excellent healthcare facilities.

One of the greatest misconceptions about the Isle of Wight is that moving here means cutting ties with the mainland business world. In the modern era of hybrid and remote working, the Island offers the ultimate work-life balance.

Many of our parents continue to work in London or the South East, splitting their week between the mainland and their Island home. Thanks to excellent transport links, a morning meeting in the capital is entirely manageable.  With high-speed broadband widely available across the Island, working from a home office overlooking the Solent has become a highly attractive reality for entrepreneurs, creatives, and corporate professionals alike.travel to and from our 17-acre Ryde campus safely and easily.

We work with a number of estate agents, several of whom are parents or governors. Please feel free to ask our advice on moving to the Island or contact:
