Prep School
Welcome to Ryde Prep School
From our Nursery and Westhill setting through to Lower Prep (ages 4–7) and Upper Prep (ages 7–10), we are committed to helping every child grow into an independent, confident and resilient learner. We encourage curiosity, a willingness to embrace new challenges, and a genuine kindness and respect for others, enabling children to flourish both academically and personally.
The wellbeing of every child lies at the heart of everything we do. We work hard to create a warm, caring and nurturing environment where excellent pastoral care ensures that every pupil feels valued, supported and able to thrive.
We have high aspirations for all our pupils, underpinned by our core values of Ambition, Responsibility, Courage and Respect. Our small class sizes and dedicated, highly qualified staff allow us to know each child as an individual, tailoring support and challenge to help every pupil achieve their full potential.
Academic excellence is central to a Ryde education and provides the strong foundation upon which everything else is built. Alongside high academic standards, our pupils benefit from a wealth of opportunities that enrich their learning and help them discover their passions. From competitive sport, creative arts and drama to public speaking, wellbeing support and personalised learning, every child is encouraged to develop their talents and interests.
Our unique coastal location also allows us to extend learning beyond the classroom. Through our bespoke Beach School and outdoor learning programmes, pupils explore, discover and learn in the natural environment, developing confidence, resilience and a lifelong love of learning.
Guided by specialist teachers and supported by a strong sense of community, our pupils leave Ryde Prep not only with excellent academic foundations, but as well-rounded, capable young people ready for the next stage of their educational journey.
The best way to experience Ryde Prep is to visit us and see our school in action. We look forward to welcoming you.

Academic Life
At Ryde Prep School, we believe a child’s school day should be a vibrant mix of discovery, movement, and joy. Our daily life is intentionally designed as a dynamic blend of rigorous academic curiosity, creative expression, and outdoor exploration where a morning of mathematics and science flows seamlessly into an afternoon of art, sport, or studying beach micro-habitats. Because we operate with complete freedom from state-mandated SATs constraints, we are able to protect and prioritise a much broader, richer education. Driven by an inquiry-led approach, our talented staff place academic ambition at the absolute centre of our curriculum, inspiring pupils to think critically, take bold intellectual risks, and cultivate a lifelong love of learning from their very first day.
Outdoor Education
Utilising our natural surroundings is part of a child’s daily learning experience. Our outdoor and Beach School provisions are not occasional field trips but core components of our weekly academic timetable. From Reception to Year 6, students step outside the classroom into purposeful discovery, whether mastering practical woodland skills or trading four walls for the shoreline every single week. By turning nature and our unique coastline into a hands on living laboratory, we foster a spirit of collaboration and curiosity that brings science, geography and history truly alive, come rain or shine.
Extra-Curricular Opportunities
At Ryde School, academic rigour sits firmly at the heart of everything we do; it is our solid foundation, much like the trunk of a great tree. While academic standards are a given, what truly sets a Ryde education apart are the vibrant branches that grow from that core. These branches represent the rich extra-curricular life and specialist care that make our school community unique: from competitive sport, creative drama and inspiring art to dedicated wellbeing support, public speaking (oracy) and tailored individual learning. Nestled on the coast, we proudly extend our classrooms into nature through our bespoke Beach School and dynamic outdoor learning programmes. Guided by specialist teachers, these rich experiences ensure our pupils don’t just achieve academically, but grow into well-rounded, resilient individuals ready for the world ahead.
Sport in the Prep
At Ryde Prep School, we foster a sport for all philosophy, teaching children the lifelong benefits of an active lifestyle. Sport is woven into daily life through specialist teaching, Senior school staff and elite partnerships, including premier coaching from Southampton FC. Every child has the opportunity to represent the school in fixtures both on and off the island, building confidence and teamwork. Capitalising on our coastal setting, our unique curriculum integrates regular swimming, open water safety and sailing from Year 3, ensuring pupils develop resilience and vital life skills both on the field and on the water.

Performing Arts
Drama, dance and music are central to our curriculum, transforming confidence and communication as children from Reception to Year 6 collaborate on major productions inside our professional Jenny Kerry Theatre. Through weekly specialist drama lessons and celebratory termly performances, every child is given a powerful platform to build community, find their voice and share their learning with the world.
