Prep School
Every Day an Adventure: Life in our Prep School
A child’s school day should be a vibrant mix of discovery, movement and joy. In our Prep School, daily life is intentionally designed to be a dynamic blend of rigorous academic curiosity, creative expression and outdoor exploration.
Here, a morning of mathematics, science and languages flow seamlessly into an afternoon of art, sport, performing art or studying micro-habitats at the beach.
At Ryde Prep, academic ambition isn’t a secondary goal; it sits at the absolute centre of our curriculum. We maintain an environment of high expectations where the core disciplines of Mathematics, English and STEM are delivered by experienced and talented staff to challenge every mind within the context of their own ability. Through an inquiry-led approach, we cultivate a deep sense of curiosity, encouraging pupils to think critically, solve complex problems and take bold intellectual risks from their very first day.

Reclaiming the Classroom: Freedom from SATs
Because we are an independent prep school, we operate with complete freedom from state-mandated testing constraints. We don’t have to waste critical curriculum time drilling children for rigid SATs examinations or teaching to a prescribed state grid. Instead, that reclaimed time is reinvested directly into giving our pupils a richer, far more broad education. This allows us to protect and prioritise deep intellectual curiosity and a love of learning, rather than short-term test preparation.
Developing a love of reading
While reading happens everywhere throughout our school, our library spaces serve as a quiet hub of imagination, storytelling and research. Here, pupils enjoy the wonderful books chosen just for them, whether for independent reading or finding facts for a class project. Every week, our pupils enjoy special library time where we help them build a true love for books, guiding them as they grow from learning their first words into confident, curious readers who love to explore the world through pages.
Partnering this, we utilise Accelerated Reader across Years 3 to 6; a fantastic digital platform that helps children select books perfectly matched to their personal reading level. For our teachers, this program serves as an invaluable diagnostic tool; its clever, adaptive assessments dynamically adjust to each child’s responses, providing precise data that ensures we can target support, track growth and celebrate every reading milestone as they go from strength to strength.
Enquiry, Frameworks, and Wisdom
Our curriculum goes far beyond the boundaries of standard frameworks to provide a modern, intellectually rich landscape:
Each term, learning across all subject lines is anchored by a cross-curricular “Big Idea”. This framework allows children to see the natural links between history, science, literature and art, making learning holistic and relevant.
We explicitly teach cognitive strategies such as persistence, managing impulsivity and active listening; this gives children a vocabulary for how they learn.
To prepare pupils for a fast-evolving digital world, technology is introduced thoughtfully and progressively. While Chromebooks are used judiciously in Years 3 and 4 to support specific skills, our 1:1 Chromebook scheme remains hybrid but becomes increasingly integrated into daily learning from Year 5 upward. Technology is utilised as a valuable tool for research, collaborative working and targeted online platforms that support progress in spelling, grammar and mathematics. While we embrace the use of IT, we are committed to the preservation of traditional skills. Chromebooks do not replace ink and paper; our pupils continue to write by hand in many daily tasks, practising fine motor control, cursive handwriting and extended creative writing on paper.
