Senior School
Extra & Co-Curricular Activities
At Ryde School, we believe that a truly exceptional education extends far beyond the classroom. Our vibrant extra- and co-curricular programmes are central to this, deliberately designed to nurture well-rounded, confident individuals.
Through these experiences, our pupils naturally develop essential life skills building lasting friendships, teamwork skills and discovering how to think creatively and independently.
We provide our students with a profound sense of purpose and a genuine excitement for life.
Consistently rated ‘Excellent’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, our programme offers something for everyone. Whether a student wants to try a new hobby for fun or pursue a passion to an elite level, we champion their journey.
Our exceptionally broad range of activities sparks every kind of interest:
- Leadership & Challenge: The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
- Creativity & Expression: Drama productions, orchestras, big band music groups, and creative writing.
- Curiosity & Discovery: Technical and creative clubs, from the innovative coding of Technology Club including Greenpower to the unique, hands-on experience of Beekeeping and cookery.
- Confidence & Voice: Public speaking and debating.
Learning here is an adventure. Our students throw themselves into regular enrichment trips, from local museum, theatre, and university visits to unforgettable annual milestones like the ski trip and bi annual trips to Ghana and Iceland. We also have an extensive exchange programme allowing our pupils to sample three weeks in other schools around the world.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards
As a Directly Licensed Centre for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Ryde School is incredibly proud to deliver and authorise the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards right here on campus. The programme is a cornerstone of our commitment to holistic education, offering our young people an enjoyable, deeply rewarding, and character-building journey of personal development.
Our pupils step onto this path of growth in Year 9 with the Bronze Award, continuing their journey through Silver and Gold in Years 11 and 12. While the programme is rigorous and requires real dedication, our students truly relish the challenge. The rewards of their hard work speak for themselves as in the last two years, 2025 and 2026 we were incredibly proud that on each year, 18 Ryde School pupils travelled to Buckingham Palace to collect their prestigious Gold Award; a testament to the independence, resilience, and leadership they cultivate throughout their time with us.
Combined Cadet Force
The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) has a long and proud tradition at Ryde School, featuring two well-established Service Sections: the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. In a safe, supportive, and dynamic environment, our cadets discover how to push their limits, develop vital personal skills, and master both leadership and teamwork.
A unique strength of the Ryde experience begins in Year 9, where every single pupil embarks on a shared, hybrid year that blends the very best of CCF and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. This collective journey is fantastic for the year group; because everyone takes part together, it creates a powerful sense of unity, equality, and shared accomplishment. By navigating these exciting new challenges side-by-side, our students build unbreakable bonds and a strong foundation of resilience that sets the tone for their senior school years and beyond.
We are immensely proud that over the past two years, two students have been appointed one of the Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets. This is a great honour as you serve as a youth ambassador for your section, and act as a personal aide to His Majesty the King’s representative of the Isle of Wight at high-profile civic, ceremonial, and military events.
Sport & Sailing

Since joining in Year 5 I have always admired the sense of community and support that the school extends to each of their pupils, and the wider island community.
I also feel incredibly fortunate for the countless opportunities that have been offered to me, that go above and beyond the excellent academic education that we receive in our subjects.
Moving into the Sixth Form offered me a growing sense of freedom but with a feeling of responsibility to act as mature role models for other pupils.
